Microsoft demoes Windows 8 Explorer Ribbon UI

The Windows 8 blog has revealed more of the Ribbon UI, which implements a multi-tabbed toolbar for frequently accessed features. Windows 8 will also bring back the Up arrow button, one of the most used Windows Explorer features.

Microsoft has used telemetry data to find out which of the commands were most used in Explorer. Research reveals that the top 10 most used commands comprise 81 percent of usage, with the top 7 commands used for managing/manipulating files. Keeping this in mind, Home, the first of 5 tabs on the Windows 8 Explorer ribbon will be tooled for frequently accessed file management features.

The next tab, Share, will facilitate quick emailing and sharing of files, View will provide easy access to preview, navigate and view details of files and folders. Search will let you filter your results by date, file type, file size, and other attributes. Lastly, the Manage tab will let users create custom shortcuts.
